New Champion Crowned at the 2006 World Graphic Design Foosball Championship
Evening Marred by Public Drunkenness, Poor Sportsmanship, Cheap Beer, and, Yes, Fun.
Newcomer Big Spaceship (1) Make Statement With Strong Play and Loud Pie-Holes.


Controversy swirled after Doyle Partners walked away last night with the One-Legged Trophy
as World Graphic Design Foosball Champions for 2006. Accusations of poor sportsmanship and
tea-totaling being aimed at the new world champions and counter claims of public drunkenness
and trash-talking pointed in the direction of co-host karlssonwilker.

Finger-pointing aside, Doyle Partners' team of Chuck Robertson and Martin Islet won this year's
championship the hard way: On the road. They defeated the defending champion O.O.P.S. (1)
(sponsored by A2A Graphics), in the winners bracket quarter finals and dispatched the
2004 WGDFC champ karlssonwilker in the winners bracket finals. After KW beat O.O.P.S (1)
in the losers bracket final, Doyle Partners defeated KW again in the tense and oddly quiet
atmosphere of the tournament final. Although once again, Felix Sockwell (of team Fuchswell)
was unable to hold back his emotions and served as commentator for the final match, and was
extremely funny or just plain insulting, depending on which side you were on...

A number of newcomers to the tournament put in strong showings: Frame 11, Sia Ea Graphic
Design and both teams of Big Spaceship each playing well. Big Spaceship (1) taking the roll
of the school yard bully with a combination of strong armed play and intimidating trash-talk.
Their tournament ended with a whimper however as they were taken down to earth in the losers
bracket semi-finals, at the hands of the defending champion O.O.P.S. (1).

The 2 teams from Ogilvy's B.I.G. had obviously practiced hard for this year's tournament, but
eventually fell short with BIG (1) finishing 5th overall. Sagmeister Inc. and Princeton Architectural
Press obviously didn't practice at all, but were seen having a good time anyway, as were a large
number of non-playing visitors this year.

We were also happy to welcome 2 Icelandic teams this year; neither of which were remotely
successful in the tournament, but on a night like this, no one seemed to care, including them.

This years tournament featured the largest turnout yet, with 50 teams making for cramped
conditions and long bathroom lines throughout the entire evening.

We want to say thanks to both Pentagram teams for not designing that night.
